PASSION, MOTIVATION, STRESS & BEING YOUR OWN BOSS

Was it hard for you to start your business?

Yes and no. The idea part was easy—I had so much passion! But building something sustainable? That took time, patience, and a whole lot of trial and error. The hardest part was believing in myself enough to keep going, even when things felt uncertain. While the vision was clear, building a sustainable business required perseverance, learning from failures, and continuously adapting. Challenges like maintaining stability, ensuring consistent cash flow, staying motivated, and effective prioritization were part of the process, but each hurdle provided valuable lessons that contributed to growth.

How did you discover your passion for entrepreneurship?

I think I’ve always been an entrepreneur at heart! I love creating things, solving problems, and helping people. But the moment I knew? When I realized I didn’t want to fit into someone else’s mold—I wanted to build something that felt like me.

How do you stay motivated, running your own business?

Motivation is a funny thing—it doesn’t just show up every morning like an alarm clock. It’s something I have to create, like a good cup of coffee! ☕ I stay motivated by remembering why I started: to help women and teams thrive, to create something meaningful, and to live life on my own terms. Also, I surround myself with amazing, inspiring people (like you!), and that energy keeps me going even on tough days. Staying motivated is like tending to a garden—it requires regular care and attention. Additionally, maintaining a schedule helps me stay on track. While it's important to be flexible when unexpected events arise, adhering to a structured plan—and having my family respect this schedule—ensures that I remain focused and balanced. Some days, motivation comes easy, and other days, I have to keep reminding myself why I started this journey in the first place.

YelloBirdie is all about creating impact, helping people grow, and making life a little more fun and meaningful—keeping that front and center helps a lot. And let’s be real—some days, a good playlist and 2 strong cups of coffee do the trick. ☕🎶

I imagine there are times when it gets super stressful. How do you deal with the stress effectively without stopping?

Oh, 100%! Stress is part of the deal, but - for the most part -  I’ve learned to manage it instead of letting it manage me. I take deep breaths, go for walks, and remind myself that not everything is urgent. I also have a little mantra: Just take the next best step. Stress usually comes from trying to control everything at once, but if I try to focus on one step at a time, I can keep moving forward without feeling overwhelmed. I also incorporate two key practices:

  1. Taking Walks: It’s not just a mental reset—science actually backs this up! Walking lowers cortisol, the stress hormone, and boosts endorphins (the happy chemicals). Plus, if I can walk near the ocean or somewhere with trees? Even better. 🌿🌊 (more science here Loma Linda University News)

  2. Box Breathing (Square Breathing): I literally just breathe in for four counts, hold it for four, exhale for four, and hold again. It’s like a mini reset button for your brain, and it works. I learned that practicing box breathing can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting calmness and reducing anxiety. Try it!

What are the educational requirements for being an entrepreneur?

Here’s the best part: there are none! You don’t need a degree to be an entrepreneur, but you do need a willingness to learn. The best entrepreneurs are curious, resourceful, and not afraid to fail. If you love learning, solving problems, and taking action, you already have what it takes! There are no formal educational prerequisites. What matters most is your commitment to continuous learning, resilience, and adaptability. Cultivating curiosity, seeking knowledge, and being open to new experiences are invaluable traits that will serve you well on this journey.

You said, "Focus on passion, then money will follow," but what if money drives me?

Money can absolutely be a great motivator, but dig a little deeper—what about money excites you? Is it freedom? Security? Influence? Power? The ability to take care of family? Once you figure that out, it helps shape your business goals. Some people are driven by creativity, others by solving problems, and some love the challenge of making money. Just make sure that whatever you’re doing to make money also makes you feel fulfilled—because money alone won’t keep you going when things get tough. Understanding the underlying drivers can provide clarity and ensure that your pursuits align with your true desires.

I love gaming. So if I don’t get signed to the Atlanta Faze in the CDL, can I start a business about gaming enhancements?

Yes! Gaming is a huge industry, and if you’re passionate about it, there’s definitely a way to turn it into a business. Find a way to add value, and you’ve got a business idea worth exploring. There is a plethora of opportunities beyond professional play. Consider areas like developing gaming accessories, offering coaching services, creating content, or organizing tournaments. By identifying gaps in the market and leveraging your passion, you can carve out a unique niche in the gaming world. If you’re passionate about it, there’s a way to make it work.

How do I know if an idea is worth chasing?

Ask yourself: Would I still be excited about this six months from now, even if it’s hard? If the answer is yes, chase it! Also, test it out—talk to people, see if there’s interest, and start small.Reflect on whether the idea excites you and if you're willing to commit to it long-term, even when faced with challenges. Additionally, test its viability by seeking feedback, conducting research, and starting with small experiments. This approach allows you to gauge interest and refine your concept before fully diving in.

    Ask yourself:

    • Does this excite me even when it’s hard?

    • Would I be willing to keep going even if it doesn’t make money right away?

    • Do people keep asking about this or showing interest?

If the answer is yes, it’s worth testing out. Start small, see how people respond, and tweak as you go!

What do I do if I have multiple intersecting passions?

Oh, I love this question. Play with all of them! Try things out, learn, experiment, and don’t feel pressured to pick just one. Sometimes, your passions will start to overlap in ways you never expected. The best ideas often come from combining things you love in a way no one else has done before. Look for ways to combine them into something unique. Some of the best ideas come from blending different interests in creative ways. Explore each passion through play, learning, and application. As you delve into each area, look for innovative ways to intertwine them. This fusion can lead to unique offerings and set you apart in the marketplace.

Is being an influencer the same as being an entrepreneur?

Not necessarily, but it can be. Influencers build audiences and often sell products or services, which is entrepreneurship. But, in my opinion, bg an entrepreneur means building something that can exist beyond just you.

I’m interested in being my own boss. Do you recommend starting now? How?

Yes! You don’t have to wait. Start small—learn, experiment, and build something on the side. The sooner you start, the sooner you learn what works for you.

If you could change how long a single day lasts, how long would you make it? How many hours of sun and how many hours of night?

What an imaginative question! If I had the power, I'd extend the day to 28 hours—allocating 18 hours to daylight and 10 to night. I’d make the day 28 hours—more time to create, rest, and enjoy life! 🌞 I’d probably go for 18 hours of sun and 10 hours of night because I love golden sunlight, but I also need cozy evenings.

What is the hardest thing about running your own business? What’s the most fun?

Stability, cash flow, and staying energized all the time. Some months are amazing, others are lean—it’s a rollercoaster! Also, figuring out what to prioritize when everything feels important. But the best part? The freedom to create something truly meaningful and to work with incredible people.

Is it hard to balance running your business and private life? How do you prioritize?

Oh yes. Balance is a moving target! I prioritize by knowing what really matters to me—my family, my well-being, and my mission. Some days, the business gets more attention; other days, I step back and focus on life.Having a schedule is SO important. It’s not rigid—I leave room for surprises—but I try my best to stick to it. And I’ve learned that my family has to respect that schedule, too. Balance isn’t about doing everything—it’s about knowing what matters most at any given moment.

I have all these ideas but know nothing about entrepreneurship. What would your advice be? Where do I start?

Start by writing them down! Keep a journal of all your ideas, thoughts, and things you learn. Then start small—watch YouTube videos, take free online courses, or even try testing a tiny version of your idea just to see how it feels. Start by starting! Pick one idea and research it. Talk to people, test it out, and don’t worry about being perfect. Business is all about learning as you go. (And check out the resources I put together below)

YelloBirdie Specific

Do you favor yellow birds, or is that something you enjoy sharing about?

Haha, I love this question! "YelloBirdie" was actually my nickname long before it became the name of my business. I cherish the lightness and joy associated with the color yellow and have always been captivated by birds. In Hawaii, the saffron finch, with its vibrant hue, is a particular favorite of mine. So, while the name carries personal significance, it also embodies the happiness and freedom that both the color and birds represent to me.The name YelloBirdie is more about the feeling of freedom, joy, and being fully yourself than about actual birds. But… I have to admit, whenever I see a yellow bird now, I take it as a little sign that I’m on the right path. 😊

Do you think you would ever work with more than just women and children?

Great question! YelloBirdie started with a focus on women because I really wanted to create something powerful for us, but I believe in helping anyone who resonates with my work. If someone outside of that group finds value in what I do, they are absolutely welcome! My goal is to build a space where people can grow and transform, and if that means expanding in the future, I’m open to it!

What’s your favorite quote?

Ooooh, so many! But one of my favorites is: "What if I fall? Oh, but my darling, what if you fly?" by Erin Hanson. It reminds me that fear is real, but so is possibility—and I always want to choose possibility. Another favorite of mine is a quote that deeply resonates with me is by Mr. Rogers: "Anything that's human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable." This reminds me of the power of open communication and facing challenges head-on. I love anything Mr. Rogers (more about Mr. Rogers here)

What kind of events do you instruct? How do you help people?

I run workshops, masterminds and coaching programs that help women step into their confidence, build meaningful work, and live life fully. I focus on mindset, storytelling, sense of self and leadership—because when you believe in yourself, everything changes. Here are a few examples:

  • Creativity Labs for Children: all about imagination, play, and hands-on creativity.

  • Fun with a Purpose for Women: think personal growth, but in a way that feels light, energizing, and exciting.

  • Vision Building Workshops: Guided experiences to help individuals craft visions for their year and life, setting meaningful goals and actionable plans.

Through these events, I aim to provide tools and insights that foster self-discovery, confidence, and purposeful living.

How much money are your workshops?

Anywhere from $29 to $3,750, depending on the depth and duration of the program. But I’ve also got two exciting memberships launching—one for women and one for kids—that make it more affordable and sustainable. I always try to make my offerings accessible and sustainable, providing ongoing access to resources and community support.

Did you used to teach art in an elementary school?

I did! I taught art for one semester, and it actually inspired me to start Creativity Labs. Art and creativity open the door to so much — problem-solving, big-picture thinking, and the ability to express yourself. That’s why I bring creative thinking into almost everything I do with YelloBirdie, it's a big part of my work. I believe everyone has a creative spark, and I love helping people find theirs.

Who is José Andrés?

José Andrés is a world-renowned chef, but he’s also a humanitarian powerhouse. He founded World Central Kitchen, an organization that provides meals in disaster zones all over the world. He believes that food is more than just nourishment—it’s a way to bring people together and provide hope. He’s proof that business and impact can go hand in hand! You can learn more about his work here.
